National
Monument At the
northern end of the Chihuahuan Desert lies a mountain ringed valley
called the Tularosa Basin. Rising from the heart of this basin is one
of the world's great natural wonders - the glistening white sands of
New Mexico. Here, great wave-like dunes of gypsum sand have engulfed
275 square miles of desert and have created the world's largest gypsum
dune field.

Despite the fact that Deming,
New Mexico does not gain its
heritage from Spanish settlers and was only established in the 1800s,
it is also rich in history. First established as a railroad town,
settlers who came afterwards left a treasure of Victorian and Craftsman
buildings as well as a legacy that is captured by Deming's museums,
walking
tours,
and area attractions.
Among the more interesting facts about Deming, New Mexico, is the
number of students who have graduated from high school in its 150 years
of history. The class
of 1966 is
an example. |
For
much of the 20th Century, at least,
another mother
road like El Camino Real was Route 66. It bisected the upper half of
New Mexico and the association newsletter you can access by clicking on
the above logo provides many hours of reminiscing for such history as
"The Mother Road" provides. If you're a Baby Boomer, you're bound to
have seen if not loved the television series of the same name. There's
more about the Association, here.
